War Diary, 558 Field Company, Royal Engineers War Diary

The detail in war diaries can vary enormously and in comparison to that of the 2nd/4th South Lancashire’s, that of 558 Field Company Royal Engineers is disappointing. Most of 1940 is represented by only a single page of text. The page does, however, record the nature of the defences that the company constructed and in so doing gives a vivid impression of the speed in which the coastline of this part of Suffolk was transformed into a military landscape (TNA WO 166/3796).
